In this Art History episode of Art with Kenneth, artist Kenneth J. Lewis Sr. continues his powerful large-scale portrait of Nina Simone in Part 2 of the series.
In Part 1, Kenneth established the portrait—capturing Nina Simone’s presence, emotion, and intensity. In this episode, the focus shifts to the background, where the real story begins to unfold. Nina Simone’s life was shaped by discipline, classical training, racism, and the pressure of being a Black genius in America long before the world celebrated her.
Born as Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, Nina Simone’s early years were defined by musical brilliance and harsh limitations. Her dream of becoming a classical concert pianist was challenged by rejection and discrimination, and that rejection became fuel that shaped her voice, her sound, and her legacy.
This episode explores the roots of Nina Simone’s fire—her childhood, her training, and the environment that created one of the most powerful voices of the 20th century.
This is more than a painting.
This is history in oil paint.
