Edit: extra notes 26-01-2017:
1) When creating a customized atlas, you can still have unwanted maps drop. These are maps you have not unlocked, but are liked on the atlas to the map you are in. If you run only shaped maps, you do not have this problem since it's linked to a map of much lower tier (-4 to -6) since you gave it +5 levels by shaping and thus became much higher then the surrounding maps.
2) It's possible to get more then normal quantity drops of a specific map. Let's say shaped strand T11 by not having a single T12 unlocked on your atlas. All T12 map drops are automaticly scaled down to an unlocked T11, in this case shaped strand. So by purposefully not completing a nice map like Vault T12 you got an easier time to maintain your shaped strand pool.
3) You can also customize your sextants. A single map cannot be influenced by multiple circles with the same sextant mod. So if you make a bad sextant circle outside your shaped strand map, but inside the strand's neighbor that can reach strand, then the neighbor cannot get the bad sextant mod. In short, this does not influence the sextant mod on the strand map, but does make efficient use of the strand's neighbor maps, because you put bad sextant mods on the neighbor's neighbors...... still follow? No I thought so. Just remember there's a trick to make more efficient use of sextant mods, and try figure it out before you consume like a 50 of them. It's a rich man's trick.
