Kemi Badenoch needs to sharpen her skills in Prime Minister’s Questions if she hopes to stay afloat in the turbulent waters of politics. The relentless chorus of Conservative MPs demands nothing less than immediate triumph.
PMQs is a weekly spectacle that shapes the political landscape. I must admit, during my time as an MP, I found little joy in it. The cacophony, the jeers, the biting remarks—very few responses leave a lasting mark.
It’s a raucous form of entertainment. I recall a moment when Speaker John Bercow shouted “order, order” nine times, desperately trying to calm the stormy House. With each shout, the uproar only grew louder, and his frustration mounted. The MPs, it seemed, thrived on his escalating annoyance.
This is, in many ways, the public face of Parliament. David Cameron once shared a story of strolling through New York when a stranger called out, “I love your show.” That captures the essence perfectly—it’s compelling television. There’s passion and drama, much of it carefully choreographed by party whips and parliamentary strategists. Yet, as an observer, one gains little insight into actual policies from the PMQs exchange.
So, what’s the purpose of this weekly ritual? Ultimately, it sends a message to the parliamentary party—the troops, if you will. They are the primary audience for the leader’s clever quips and barbs.
A strong performance in PMQs can invigorate the backbenchers, fostering a fleeting sense of camaraderie and hope. While these feelings may be temporary, they hold value in the moment. Thus, the murmurs among Tories regarding Kemi Badenoch’s inconsistent showings at PMQs carry some significance.
However, whether a stellar PMQs performance translates into success at the polls is another matter entirely. Tony Blair was a formidable Leader of the Opposition, adept at mocking John Major and presenting himself as a viable Prime Minister. His barbs were often sharp and unrefined, with memorable lines like, “I lead my party, he follows his.”
