China's Shenzhou spacecraft docks with orbital lab to begin 30-day mission

China's latest spacecraft, the Shenzhou-11 has successfully docked with the country's orbital space laboratory.
Following the footsteps of the U.S. and Russia,... China is only the third country to dock a vessel with crew... in space.
While China celebrates, the mission and the nature of the operation are being closely watched by other nations around the world.

China's sixth manned space mission appears to be off to a promising start.
The Shenzhou-11 spacecraft, launched from northern China on Monday, has docked with the nation's space laboratory Tiangong 2.
Following Wednesday's successful docking... the two Chinese astronauts onboard will spend the next 30 days in orbit conducting scientific experiments.
China says the mission is peaceful, focused on improving rescue capabilities and cultivating plants.
But the nature of such aerospace projects by any country is inherently related to defense or military goals.
That's why experts suggest the project is being closely monitored, especially by the United States.



"When it comes to endeavors in outer space,... the relationship between the U.S. and China started to sour back in the early 2000s... when the U.S. invited a number of nations, including China, to join the International Space Station project. But China rejected the offer and expanded its own project."

Adding to that, the expert also says this mission has drawn attention not just from the U.S.... but from many other countries both as a scientific achievement... and as an independent political undertaking by Beijing.
The Tiangong 2, whose name translates to "Heavenly Palace," is China's second experimental space lab launched in September as part of the Tiangong program... which started back in 1992 with the aim of creating a permanent manned space station by the year 2022.
