Cox wrote the short on a May afternoon in 2023. 2 weeks later, the film was cast via Instagram in a method dubbed by Cox as "digital street casting." Another 2 weeks passed and the actors, who were discovered on Instagram and who had never met each other, arrived on Cape Cod, Massachusetts where the film was shot over the next 2 days.

The film had its world premiere on June 12, 2024 at the 26th Annual Provincetown International Film Festival where it opened the shorts program. In an interview, Cox recalled how FAR FROM WATER almost didn't exist, as he was initially set to shoot a feature in the spring of 2023, but decided to pursue developing a short to further hone-in on what he was trying to say through his art. Ultimately, he loved the story so much and moved into production for the project as quickly as possible.
