(Unlocking Mass:The Higgs)
In this video, we explore one of the most important ideas in modern physics, the Higgs mechanism, introduced by Peter Higgs in the 1960s.
The Higgs mechanism explains how elementary particles acquire mass without breaking the fundamental principles of relativistic quantum field theory. By coupling scalar fields to gauge fields, the theory shows how symmetry can be spontaneously broken, allowing some gauge bosons to become massive while others remain massless.
This idea is closely related to phenomena in superconductivity, but extended into a fully relativistic framework suitable for particle physics.
This framework ultimately led to the prediction and later discovery of the Higgs boson, completing the Standard Model of particle physics.
