Districts across Nevada deal with declining enrollment, reduced school budgets

Описание: While the Clark County School District is addressing a $50 million reduction in school budgets next year, districts across the state are also dealing with similar financial challenges.

The issue many are citing is a decline in student enrollment across Nevada and the entire country.

Money follows the student, so fewer students mean schools lose funding

CCSD has been making changes to address the budget reductions through things like budgeting out about 1,200 employees who can apply to vacancies at other schools, and some reductions at the district level.

Washoe County, the second largest school district in Nevada, initially projected and $18 million deficit for the upcoming school year.

But Washoe Education Association President Calen Evans says the district was able to balance the budget.

"There were some reduction in force in terms of positions outside of the classroom. Our school board trustees and district leadership have really been doing all they can to kind of safeguard those staff that are at the school sites," said Evans.

He says those reductions were at the central office level.

He says they also eliminated vacant positions.
