Alcohol is deeply tied to how we socialise, relax, and define fun.
But biology does not care about our emotional relationship with it.
In this clip, author Phil Cavell and endurance athlete Dr Nigel Stephens discusses why reducing alcohol, or cutting it out entirely, can significantly benefit heart health and performance in midlife athletes.
Drawing on evidence discussed in The Midlife Cyclist, Nigel explains why even low levels of alcohol intake are associated with harm to the heart and brain. The epidemiology shows a clear dose response, with adverse effects appearing at surprisingly small amounts, sometimes as low as three to five units per week.
This is especially relevant for endurance athletes in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, where alcohol plays a recognised role in conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Removing it can reduce physiological stress, improve recovery, and support long term cardiovascular health.
If your priority is optimising performance and protecting your heart, alcohol free alternatives may be the simplest and most effective change you can make.
