Manchester Street Scenes (1901)
These scenes of Market Street, still Manchester's busiest shopping area, encapsulate the bustling energy of the city centre in the Edwardian era. 1901 saw the inauguration of the city's first electric tram route, which would soon replace the horse-drawn method depicted here. Showman A.D. Thomas is seen distributing tickets for the forthcoming travelling film show to pedestrians.

The film was included in a programme of films titled 'Life in Manchester' shown daily at St James’s Hall throughout the summer of 1901. It offers rich insights into various aspects of urban life, including the growing confidence of women, who are shown wandering freely around the city centre. The inclusion of the long-take of the Boer soldier and the blond-haired boy (probably the soldier's son) reflects contemporary public interest in the ongoing Anglo-Boer war, which was widely covered in contemporary media and in popular literature such as comics.

Whitehaven Street Scenes (c.1902)
The town in this particularly attractive film, originally one of our 'Edwardian Enigmas', has now been positively identified as Whitehaven, on the Cumbrian coast. The Anchor Vaults pub still stands on the corner of Queen Street and Market Place today. At one point a pair of showmen lark about with vegetables from a street grocer's stall, then hand out handbills advertising this film's screening.

Liverpool Street Scenes (1901)
Seen from the city's 'Holy Corner', Liverpool is a hive of people and traffic: in the early 1900s much trade was conducted on the streets. Liverpool had become a wealthy city, and the shop fronts are filled with items for sale. Unusually, we see a motor car, a potent symbol of prosperity. One of the passengers may be Sagar Mitchell - half of filmmaking duo Mitchell and Kenyon.

Two rolls of film were used to make up this one film and it would have proved of great interest to local people, many of whom will have paid between sixpence and a hefty two shillings in the hope of catching a glimpse of themselves on screen. The film would also have been seen as great advertising for the vehicle and its seller, and for all the shops featured.
