On LIVE Barn Owl Florida Cam 1 (University of Florida), the mother and her three nestlings perform gular fluttering to stay cool inside the warm nest box. Birds do not sweat; instead, Barn Owls (Tyto furcata) rapidly vibrate the thin throat membrane to increase evaporative cooling.
This behavior is a vital thermoregulation strategy during hot conditions. Live wildlife nest cameras provide rare insight into how raptors manage heat stress while continuing incubation, brooding, and chick development.
What does this mean? (Quick science note)
Gular flutter increases airflow across moist throat tissues, enhancing evaporative heat loss without the high energy cost of full panting. Effective thermoregulation is essential for chick survival in warm climates.
This video is meant to document the lives of wild animals so that we can learn more for both educational & research purposes and serve as an aid for the species conservation effort. We do not set up/ stage or intervene but only document the lives of wild animals.
