From raising his hand for solos as a student to stepping into new musical challenges today, Jim has always leaned into opportunity, even when it meant being uncomfortable. His first connection to the instrument came through his mother’s silver Selmer saxophone, sparking a lifelong pursuit of sound, expression, and growth.

Raised in Wisconsin, Jim performed at Lincoln Center as a high school senior through the Essentially Ellington program, sharing the stage with Wynton Marsalis in a moment that affirmed his path forward. After moving to New York, he embraced the city’s demanding musical culture, ultimately deepening his craft through study with Dave Pietro at NYU and adopting a perpetual student mindset that continues to define his work.
As an educator, Jim meets students where they are, focusing on sustainable practice habits, curiosity, and a love of music rather than ego or labels. Improvisation remains central to his voice, allowing ideas to flow freely and honestly through the instrument.

Jim hopes to be remembered as someone who worked hard, stayed open, and never stopped learning.
