Tarot Throw Down! Rider Waite vs. Sakki Sakki Death
Ready, set, Tarot!
This month we are comparing the best and worst of the Sakki Sakki tarot deck imagery against the traditional symbols and meanings of the Rider-Waite tarot. Who will come out on top, and who will have to deal with the hand they are dealt?
Today we talk about the Death card and the tranformative meanings. Or was that be transformed by the meanings....

This month we are talking about the Sakki Sakki Tarot and comparing it to the traditional Rider Waite. Today we are picking apart the Death card.
Most people freak out a little bit if they're new to tarot. The Death card is not all about death, doom, destruction. Nope. That's the Tower card.
But back to these Death cards and how they compare. Both are thirteen in the Major Arcana. Both are named as Death. Which we saw is not always the case in the Sakki Sakki deck. They are similar in a lot of ways.
I want to start with the Rider Waite so we have the symbolism then review the Sakki Sakki. Again a lot of people see number thirteen and go, that’s bad luck. Death is bad. Skulls are bad. All these things really make it more of a transformation card.
My favorite version of Death has been the Insect Tarot, because it shows transformation energy rather than just an ending.
Transformation is natural and expected. It’s something we all experience. It doesn't necessarily have to be death in the physical sense. We all pass through processes where we kill our old selves, or old beliefs and grow into something new. In order for that to happen there has to be a transition. There has to be death.
In this particular card death rides a white horse, He is Skull-faced. I like that he's not wearing the grim reaper robes, but rather a knight's armor. He carries the standard with the lily or rosette. These represent death, transformation, and peace. In front of him three people appear in the process of death or dying; the king has fallen, his crown is on the ground, there is also a child, and a woman. Standing before death is a papal character. Even he will fall to death, because we all do.
High in the background of this card, in the mountains, there are pillars you may find familiar. They are similar to those in the Tower and the Moon card. We are leading past these experiences or toward them, because we know the Major arcana is a cycle. The Sun is setting and the sky is a muted blue. It's peaceful. Much about this card is peaceful. Death does not come riding rampant like the Knight of Swords. He is slow and steady. Death comes for all. We cannot escape. I like that Death is parading through rather than running, or at a standstill.
