WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT BUGANDA PALACE: HORROR PAST
Buganda Palace, also known as Lubiri, is more than just a royal residence—it's a historical landmark that holds some of Uganda’s deepest and darkest secrets. From the reign of the Buganda kings to the horrors of Idi Amin’s dictatorship, this place carries a legacy that few dare to speak about.
During my visit, I uncovered shocking truths about the palace and its significance in Uganda’s history. Here’s what I learned:
The Royal Influence of Buganda Kingdom
The Buganda Kingdom operates with its own structured administration, almost like a government.
The Kabaka (King) has a private passage within the palace that no one else is allowed to use.
Luganda is considered Uganda’s second national language due to its widespread influence.
Buganda kings have played a massive role in shaping Uganda, but their palace holds a dark past.
The Horrors of Idi Amin’s Torture Chamber
Initially built by the Israelis for Idi Amin, this underground facility was later converted into a torture chamber.
Over 1,000 people were brutally killed under Amin’s regime, and after his downfall, the next government continued using it, leading to over 6,000 more deaths.
The chamber is filled with engraved messages from prisoners, marking their final moments before execution.
The current Kabaka (King) refuses to live in the palace because he believes it is cursed due to the atrocities committed there.
Shocking Discoveries from My Tour
I saw a Rolls Royce and other vintage cars used in the palace back in the day.
There is still a cannon gifted by Muammar Gaddafi to Idi Amin, symbolizing Libya’s military support during Amin’s rule.
Idi Amin once planned to rename Uganda to "IDI", but was advised against it when someone pointed out that citizens would be called Idiots (just like how people from Cyprus are called Cypriots).
He proclaimed himself "Emperor of the British People" tricking Queen Elizabeth into visiting him in his village and made her bow down to into those small old houses to have a conversation with him.
This palace is a powerful reminder of Uganda’s history—both its royal grandeur and its horrific past.
