HP Umpire Pat Hoberg ejected White Sox manager Pedro Grifol for arguing the crew's denial of Grifol's untimely challenge request after a safe call by 2B Umpire Nestor Ceja. Replay Review's rule states that managers must hold immediately after the conclusion of the play. The crew denied Grifol's challenge as a result. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2023/...
The Deadline to Initiate Replay rule changed for the 2023 season (as other pace of play initiatives such as the pitch clock were introduced) and specified that a hold signal from the manager is now required "immediately after the conclusion of the play" (if the manager doesn't immediately signal a challenge request). Upon the hold signal being acknowledged by the umpire, the manager then has 15 seconds to decide whether or not to challenge.
With one out and the bases loaded, Dodgers batter Austin Barnes hit a 0-1 sinker from White Sox pitcher Aaron Bummer on the ground to shortstop Tim Anderson, who threw to second baseman Elvis Andrus as Dodgers baserunner R1 Miguel Vargas slid into second base, ruled safe by 2B Umpire Ceja.
After the play concluded, HP Umpire Hoberg looked into Chicago's dugout for a hold signal, but did not see one. Later, Grifol decided he DID want to challenge the play and, having seen Hoberg had moved on, tried requesting the challenge with 1B Umpire Jacob Metz, although Grifol's failure to hold immediately after the play meant that any challenge attempt would be considered untimely and thus denied.
