In 1935, Swiss adventurer Ella Maillart accomplished what every expert declared impossible: she crossed 3,500 miles of war-torn China from Beijing to India—on horseback and camel, through bandit-controlled territories, deadly deserts, and the highest mountain passes on Earth.
This is her true story.
For seven brutal months, Ella navigated civil war, Soviet intrigue, and extreme conditions that killed even the most experienced travelers. The route? Through the desolate Tsaidam plateau, across the Takla Makan desert (literally meaning "go in and you won't come out"), and over 15,000-foot mountain passes in the Karakoram range.
As a woman in the 1930s, she faced barriers beyond the physical. Society expected her to marry and settle down. Instead, she told her father she'd "rather die" than accept a conventional life—and proved it by embarking on one of the 20th century's most daring expeditions.
Traveling with British journalist Peter Fleming (whose younger brother would later create James Bond), Ella documented vanishing nomadic cultures, navigated political intrigue in forbidden territories, and captured it all with her Leica camera.
