We expect them to solve problems that no one person can solve, to heal divisions that run deeper than any office can reach. And when they fail—as they inevitably must—we blame them for the failures of a system designed to frustrate concentrated power. Yet Article II reminds us that the presidency was designed for neither heroes nor tyrants. It was designed for citizens who would serve and then return to citizenship. The oath is to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution—not to transform it, not to transcend it, not to embody it personally.
