Souq al-Hamidiyya (Hamidiyya market) is a covered market in Damascus, capital of Syria. It is located in the old part of the city.
The history of the market is very ancient. According to legend, in the 7th century, on the orders of the Umayyad Caliph Yazid ibn Muawiyah, prisoners of Karbala were taken through this area.
The current appearance of the market dates back to the 18th century. It was built in 1780 by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I. Therefore, it has been known as the Hamidiyya Souq. Later, the market was further expanded during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II.
The length of the market is approximately 500 meters, width 15 meters, and height 8 meters. The market is covered with a metal roof.
At the end of the market are the remains of the Temple of Jupiter from the ancient Roman era and the Umayyad Mosque, one of the oldest and largest mosques in the world.
