The WORST Garden Pest - Japanese Beetles

These pesky little critters have a simple life of eating (your crops) and mating at an alarming rate! We discuss how to prevent these from becoming a problem as well as how to attempt to get rid of them once they are in your garden. These Japanese Beetle pest fighting gardening tips will help keep your garden happy and healthy long after the Japanese Beetles are gone!

JAPANESE BEETLE IDENTIFICATION
Ways to IDENTIFY if you might have Japanese Beetles. They are approximately 1cm (1/2 inch) at the largest and are shiny (almost gold when the sun hits them) and they will be covering your leaves. They tend to leave a skeletal leaf remain when done with the plant before moving on to their next garden victim.

BEST ways to get rid of Japanese Beetles in your garden:

1. Squeeze them (wear gloves!) They give off an odour when crushed which also warns other beetles to stay clear. Combine this with #2 and #3 to maximize results.

2. Plant begonias. When Japanese beetles eat the petals of the begonia plants, they fall to the ground in a drugged-like state. This makes it easier to perform #1 and #3 on this list. Japanese beetles tend to go towards certain plants a) Begonias b) Grapevines c) Roses.

3. Have a container of soapy water (with suds) nearby. Put the drugged and crushed Japanese Beetles in the soapy water. The ones that are not dead will not live long as they cannot fly away and will have difficulty breathing. You do not want them burrowing in the ground and laying eggs or this process will reset. If you do not have begonias, crushing the Japanese Beetles and putting them in the soapy water or if you prefer (although less effective) simply shaking the leaves with the beetles on them into the soapy water directly. Please keep in mind, you will need to refresh this soapy water container on a regular basis.

4. Japanese Beetle Bait traps. This is effective in trapping them. I put this last on the list as it is also effective in bringing NEW Japanese Beetles to your garden. They will actually fly miles to get to a bait trap unless there is a better food source along the way. This is not to say that the traps are not effective, but they are not my first option for this reason alone.

Keeping up with the Growing & Learning theme. I learned today (after posting this video) that Begonias are also a way to control the Japanese Beetles as they are attracted to them. The best part of planting the begonia is that they also get drugged when they eat the begonia, unlike the roses or grapes where they continue gorging on the leaves and petals!
