They tried to kill a five-year-old child.
Not as punishment for a crime. Not in the chaos of war. But systematically. Methodically. Seven deliberate attempts to end the life of a boy whose only crime was telling the truth.
His father, Hiranyakashipu, the demon who had conquered heaven and become unkillable had a problem. His own son refused to worship him. Worse, his son was converting other demon children to worship Vishnu, the very god Hiranyakashipu had spent 100,000 years trying to transcend.
So the cosmic emperor did what tyrants do when persuasion fails: he tried elimination.
Attempt 1: THE CLIFF
They took Prahlada to the highest cliff in existence—so tall that clouds gathered below it. They threw him off without ceremony. He should have shattered on the rocks. Instead, the wind caught him like a breath, and he landed in a bed of flowers that hadn't existed moments before.
Attempt 2: THE ELEPHANTS
War elephants. Dozens of them. Massive beasts trained to trample armies. They charged the child at full speed. And then... they stopped. Inches from his body. And they knelt. As if recognizing something ancient in his eyes.
Attempt 3: THE POISON
Enough poison to kill twelve warriors, mixed into his food. Prahlada ate it, tasted something sweet like honey, and asked for seconds. The poisoner fled screaming, "He's not human!"
Attempt 4: THE OCEAN
Bound in chains. Weighted with stones. Thrown into the deepest part of the cosmic ocean. He sank for three days. When they finally retrieved him curious if there was even a body left they found him sitting on the ocean floor. Surrounded by fish. Smiling. "It's peaceful down there," he said. "Vishnu's voice is very clear in the deep."
After each failed attempt, Prahlada would return to the palace. Not angry. Not traumatized. Smiling. And he would say the same thing:
"Vishnu protects those who remember him."
By the seventh attempt, even the demon guards were starting to believe. Half the kingdom was secretly chanting Vishnu's name before sleep. And Hiranyakashipu was unraveling.
Because he had tried everything. Earth, water, fire, air. Poison, beasts, weapons, sorcery. Nothing worked.
And with every survival, every miracle, every impossible return, one question grew louder in the demon king's mind:
What if the child is right?
