Jim Dowling along with five others were fined rather than imprisoned for their action at PIne Gap last year. The trial went for seven days in Alice Springs which returned a guilty verdict by a jury for unlawful entry under the Defense Special Undertakings Act (1952). The sentencing was deferred for over a week and transferred to Brisbane Federal Court. Jim received the largest of all the fines due to his extensive criminal record (or heroic citizenship!) and ordered to pay $5000. The judge (Justice Reeves) did not want to impose a custodial penalty as he thought it would make him a 'martyr for the cause'. Joseph is one of Jim's seven children and was at the sentencing.
