The Shanghai Museum is famous for a diverse collection of ancient Chinese handicrafts, including artifacts made from jade lacquer gold, silverware, enamels, furniture, the four treasures of the study (writing brush, ink stick, ink slab, and paper), dyed or woven textiles, embroideries, carvings of bamboo, wood and rhinoceros’ horn. Also, artifacts such as ethnic minority handicrafts, folk art, and foreign handicrafts find their home here.
The jade collection has a long history. The collection of lacquerwares are rich and diverse in shapes and decors. The collection of Ming and Qing hardwood furniture is famous for their excellent quality. Famous ink sticks and ink slabs account for a large portion of the collection of the four treasures of the study. Textiles showcase the elegance of Jiangnan, while the bamboo carvings highlight the spirit of literati creations. The other artifacts also have their own strengths and unique features.
