"Sandy Lake First Nation", or, ᓀᑲᣞ ᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᓃᐣᐠ, (Negaw-zaaga'iganiing Nitam-Anishinaabe) is an independent, Oji-Cree First Nation band, government and community. The First Nations community, in the west part of Northern Ontario, is located in the Kenora District, 227 km (141 mi) northeast of Red Lake, Ontario. Sandy Lake First Nation maintains an affiliation with Nishnawbe Aski Nation, as a signatory to Treaty 5. Sandy Lake is policed by the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, an Indigenous-based service. The First Nation maintains seven neighbourhoods, grouped into five districts:Airport / Centre, Big Rock/Ghost Point, Old Sawmill, River and Roman Catholic. The First Nation is a fly-in community, serviced by Wasaya, Superior and Perimeter Airlines and is linked to the rest of the province by a winter ice road. Five doodem are found at Sandy Lake First Nation. These five clans are the: Suckers, Pelicans, Crane, Caribou and Sturgeon. Juno-nominated artist, 'Aysanabee' is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer/songwriter, who is currently based in Toronto. He is Oji-Cree, of the Sucker Clan and from Sandy Lake First Nation. The earliest person recorded is Porcupine Standing Sideways. His ancestors, or other people of that generation are not recorded in the fur trade journals.The other person recorded was a hunter, by the name of Shell (see: 'Killing The Shaman', a book by Thomas Fiddler and Jim Stevens).
