Replicating the design of ancient Siberian pit houses, a trapper built his semi-buried cabin with no side door. The only entrance was a ladder descending through a trapdoor in the roof. Neighbors mocked him for climbing like a squirrel. But physics proved him right: cold air sinks and hot air rises. Because there was no ground-level door to let the heavy cold air flow in, the heat pool at the ceiling stayed trapped inside. This "Heat Trap" design kept his living quarters 25 degrees warmer than cabins with drafty vertical doors.
