Comparing an artist in 1720 to one in 2026 requires normalizing drastically different mediums of music consumption. To solve this, the HPI processes extensive historical records, industry data, and demographic shifts, dynamically adjusting its criteria based on the technological era to calculate a highly accurate "Relative Popularity Score" for every year.

The Index evaluates artists based on era-specific metrics:

📜 Classical & Romantic (1700 – 1890):
Calculated using surviving records of sheet music publication, European court commissions, documented opera/concert attendance, and cross-border cultural influence.

📻 Physical & Broadcast (1890 – 2005):
Calculated using physical unit sales (Phonograph cylinders, Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs), global RIAA/IFPI certifications, global radio broadcasting reach, and historical chart performances (e.g., Billboard Hot 100).

📱 Digital & Streaming (2005 – Present):
Calculated using digital downloads, global streaming volume (Spotify, Apple Music), YouTube music video viewership, and worldwide touring gross.

How the Index Works:
Because 10,000 sheet music sales in the 1700s represented a massive cultural dominance compared to 10,000 streams today, the index normalizes these disparate datasets. It assigns an aggregated score reflecting an artist's market share of attention for any given year.

The resulting bar chart race provides a data-driven visualization of how musical popularity has evolved over time, offering insights into the artists who have influenced and shaped music history.
