Gestalt Language Processing, Gestalt Language Development, and Natural Language Acquisition: these terms are all over social media, as is criticism of them. And criticism of the criticisms. In this talk, I identify five claims related to NLA/GLP and examine research evidence that I see as relevant to those claims. This talk is similar to an oral seminar I gave at the 2025 ASHA Convention. I added back some material I cut in order to fit the time constraints of Convention talks, and recorded the talk so that anyone interested in my perspective on NLA, GLP, and GLD could hear it. I was recovering from the flu as I recorded, and I’m working on not looking totally bored when I record without an audience, but I hope you find this perspective helpful!

Commenting guidelines:
I welcome comments from all perspectives. Whether your comment is positive, negative, or somewhere in between, please ensure that your comments are specific to something I said (ideally with an approximate time stamp), avoid demeaning rhetoric about anyone, and cite the evidence you have for any claim you make. I will be moderating comments to ensure they follow my guidelines. I do not moderate my Instagram comments, so head over to language_processing on IG if your feedback really can't wait.
Note: The intended audience of this talk is speech-language pathologists. Of course, putting the talk on YouTube means that anyone who wants to can see it! For individuals and families who have found a benefit to things you learned from NLA/GLP, I’m glad you found something that worked for you and I do not want to take that away from you. This talk should not be interpreted as clinical advice, and the clinical approaches I describe are not an exhaustive description of research-aligned practice. I do not describe any treatment or assessment approach in enough detail that I expect anyone to feel comfortable implementing it right away, and I encourage clinicians to check my reference list to learn more.
AI disclosure: I did not use generative AI to create any part of this presentation.
