Join me as I head into the mountains during Storm Arwen - what turned out to be the most brutal night I’ve spent in the outdoors in my entire life. I foolishly decided I would try and push the limits of my gear beyond what it was designed for and I have posted this video as a reminder to others, not to do this. The Nordisk Telemark 2.2LW is a 2 / 3 season tent weighing only 1010 grams - it didn’t stand a chance, as the winds were forecast to be in excess of 70MPH and described as ‘hurricane force’ on the MWIS forecast. I thought I might get away with it if I found a sheltered patch on the ridge which I know very well; unfortunately it wasn’t sheltered enough and the ferocious winds almost lifted this tent off the ridge entirely and resulted in a snapped pole.

This was NOT a failure of the tent, or poles - it was a failure of MY DECISION MAKING - which, for reasons I explain in the video; was lacking on this trip.

I would like to point out that I have over 25 years experience of hiking in the mountains in various weather conditions, including severe. I had informed numerous people of my grid reference / location and a time I was expected back, I had all proper equipment and I know how to navigate - in short, I knew that even if the worst happened, I would be able to extricate myself from the situation alone. I purposely chose a location with easy terrain and where I could be back at the start point in around 20 minutes - as such, I was happy that the risks I took were calculated and safe. I had all equipment and clothing and given the location I was in, was confident no matter what, that I would have been able to get down without relying on anyone else.

I absolutely do not encourage people to place themselves at risk, which ultimately may incur others taking this risks to instigate a rescue. The purpose of this video is to encourage people to think about the limitations of their equipment and not exceed this - I for one learned a valuable lesson and I hope that some others do.

I hope that those thinking of expressing criticism can do so constructively and with the above points in mind.
