Anne Conroy-Burke (button accordion), Anne’s sister Mary Conroy (guitar) Eileen O’Brien (fiddle) and Deirdre McSherry (flute, piano) at The Gathering Festival of Music and Arts, Killarney 09.02.25. Eileen O'Brien (Tipperary) comes from a family background that is steeped in the Irish tradition. Her father Paddy was instrumental in establishing the B/C style of button accordion playing as we know it today. Paddy was also one of the most prolific composers of traditional music. Dinny O’Brien, (Eileen’s grandfather) played fiddle and concertina and was a highly influential figure in Irish traditional music. He was the leader of the “Bridge Ceili Band” in the 1950’s and 60’s. Eileen’s late mother was a member of the Seery family from Milltown, Rathconrath, Mullingar. Her mother Eileen Seery was a noted singer in her day. Eileen’s uncle, Sean Seery (piper) and grandfather Jim Seery (fiddle player) were both founder members of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. Eileen is an All-Ireland champion in both senior fiddle and senior fiddle slow airs. She is also a composer and some of her compositions have been recorded by the artists Matt Molloy, John Carty, The Kane Sisters, Paddy Carty & Conor Tully. Eileen has performed and given masterclasses and lectures in many countries, U.S.A Europe, China, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. She is a highly respected teacher and has influenced many aspiring fiddle players. At present Eileen works at the I.W.A.M.D at the University of Limerick where she teaches students undertaking both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She has performed with many great names over the years like Bobby Gardiner, Joe Burke, Ann Conroy- Burke, Martin Connolly, Jimmy McGreevy, Charlie Harris, Deirdre McSherry, Martin & Seamus Connolly, Martin Hayes, Mary & Andrew McNamara, Geraldine & Eamon Cotter, Catherine McEvoy and many more. Eileen has recorded three solo albums to date, “Newtown Bridge” (1999), “The Fiddler’s Choice” (2005) and “Aon le hAon” (2012). As a member of “The Boruma Trio” Eileen recorded the album “Gléas” with Andrew MacNamara and Dr Geraldine Cotter. This album focused on the nuances and contrasts between the East Clare and North Tipperary musical tradition. She has produced two books of music, “The Compositions of Paddy O’Brien” (1991) and “The Definitive Collection of the Music of Paddy O’Brien” (2009) both published by J.D.C.Publications, Troon, Ayreshire, Scotland.
Anne Conroy Burke is a highly respected musician and accordion teacher from East Galway. Ireland. Having performed music for many years throughout her lifetime, Anne has a deep and natural understanding of the music, having listened and learned first to the rich tradition of her native county, having fond memories of her father taking her to hear Paddy Carty, flute player and the many greats who came to join him in Moylan`s and Delaney`s bars, Loughrea and later to the many fine musicians she met on her world travels and tours. She regularly teaches music at her home and at summer schools/workshops. She plays a 2 row B/C accordion system For the past few years she has Co Hosted the annual" Accordion Recital" with Jackie Daly, at the Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy Week, in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare.
Mary Conroy´s distinctive voice and range of repertoire, plus her unique style of guitar accompaniment and knowledge of traditional Irish music makes her much in demand. Mary has recorded with, John Bowe (button accordion), Rodger Sherlock (flute), Mick Woods (flute), Kevin Taylor (piano accordion & piano). Mary has been a music presenter with Radio Kerry since 1990, her current programme "Tog Sos" runs on Mondays from 8-10pm.
Deirdre McSherry is from just outside Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. She is highly regarded in traditional music circles for her piano accompaniment and is also a noted flute player. She plays the Boehm system of flute. Her piano accompaniment is light and lively and adds an extra sparkle to any melody instrument she accompanies. She has appeared at Fleadhanna and festivals throughout the world, including returning as an annual guest artist at the Jimmy McHugh Memorial Concert in Glasgow. She has performed on numerous occasions on television and radio.
