Proceedings in Parliament continued on Thursday during the Budget Session as both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha took up key legislative and economic business ahead of the presentation of the Union Budget. The focus of the day remained on preparations for the tabling of the Economic Survey, which is expected to outline the state of the Indian economy and set the tone for the government’s fiscal roadmap.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present the Economic Survey 2025–26, a comprehensive document prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs under the guidance of the Chief Economic Adviser. The survey reviews economic performance over the past year and provides projections related to growth, inflation, employment, fiscal deficit and external trade. Its findings are seen as crucial in shaping expectations from the Union Budget, which will be presented on February 1.
The Budget Session began on January 28 with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament. In her speech, the President highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive development, national security and the vision of a developed India, urging Members of Parliament to work together on issues of national importance. The address, however, drew criticism from opposition parties, who termed it repetitive and accused the government of failing to address pressing concerns such as unemployment, price rise and rural distress.
Political tensions were visible in both Houses as opposition members raised demands related to social welfare schemes, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, and called for greater allocation of funds for rural employment and public welfare. The government, on its part, defended its economic policies, stating that sustained growth and reforms were necessary for long-term stability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking ahead of the day’s proceedings, referred to India’s expanding global economic engagement and said recent trade initiatives, including agreements with international partners, would open new opportunities for Indian businesses and strengthen the country’s economic position.
As Parliament moves closer to the presentation of the Union Budget, debates are expected to intensify over economic priorities, fiscal discipline and social sector spending. The Budget Session is scheduled to continue till early April, with a recess planned in between, and is likely to witness sharp exchanges between the government and the opposition over the direction of the country’s economic and political future.
