Our next guest on Still Standing is Joe — a man who has been around recovery for over 15 years and first found his way into the rooms at just 18 years old. Even at such a young age, Joe knew something wasn’t right. Substances had already begun to destroy his life, and he recognised that he needed help before it took everything from him.

Like many who come into recovery young, Joe had periods where he believed he had gathered himself enough to go on and live a fulfilling life. But with youth came the feeling of missing out. That curiosity pulled him back out there to do more “research” with drugs and alcohol, only for Joe to discover that the life he once chased no longer fitted who he was becoming.

Around two years ago, Joe returned seeking support once again. This time, he didn’t go into residential treatment. Instead, a friend who had also just come back to live in sobriety reached out to him. Together, they made a decision to change their lives. Joe came back to the rooms, applied himself, and committed to recovery.

However, past actions caught up with him. As a result, Joe was sentenced to five months in prison — one of the biggest challenges he has ever faced. Inside, he was surrounded daily by inmates using substances. In Joe’s own words, he had no choice. He had to stay clean. He had to stay focused. This was his last chance saloon.

With unwavering support from the fellowship and his now fiancée, Joe held firm. On release, he returned to a loving, recovering community and continued to build the life he had always hoped for.

Today, Joe is living a life beyond his wildest dreams. He is a proud father to one beautiful baby, with another on the way, soon to be married, and grounded in a life of purpose, connection, and sobriety.

This episode is about perseverance, accountability, and what’s possible when you refuse to give up — even when the odds are stacked against you.
