On July 9, 2025, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project marked a major milestone with the first breakthrough in the 21 km long tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata in Maharashtra. This breakthrough signifies the successful completion of a 2.7 km continuous tunnel section.
Of the total tunnel length, 5 km is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli, while the remaining 16 km will be built with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnel also features a 7 km undersea section beneath Thane Creek.
To accelerate progress, an Additional Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) was built, enabling simultaneous excavation from both ends. So far, 1.62 km has been excavated from the Shilphata side, with overall NATM progress reaching 4.3 km.
Extensive safety measures are in place, including ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges, and biometric access controls to ensure secure and precise tunnelling operations.
