Surviving a Global Conflict: Best Countries for Safety and Refuge
Where would be the safest place to be in the event of a third world war?
This is the kind of question you've probably asked yourself at some point, whether in history class, watching a documentary on Netflix, or reflecting on the toilet. Nowadays, more than a few people are asking this question in a much more realistic way. Despite our advocacy for peace and reluctance to add fuel to the fire, the world today is quite heated.
To answer this question, we first have to engage in some fiction and consider which countries would be the main belligerents. We'll present six quick scenarios where, today, the situation could escalate enough to lead us into a total war.
The first scenario is the one we all imagine: the escalating tension in Europe due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This could lead NATO and Russia to enter into direct war.
The second scenario involves a worsening situation in the Middle East. For example, Israel could draw the United States into a war against the regional resistance axis, led by Iran.
Another possibility is a war between the United States and China, starting with a conflict between these two major powers in the Indo-Pacific region.
Another absolute hotspot is the conflict between India and Pakistan.
Additionally, we have the two Koreas, which, as we know, have a volatile relationship, especially since South Korea is allied with the United States.
Finally, we must also mention the unstable Sahel region in Africa, a battleground where major powers are also involved.
In all these scenarios, the probability of the United States, Russia, or even Iran being involved is extremely high. There is also a significant likelihood of a total war involving India or China. Of course, the allies of all these powers would also find it difficult to escape a global conflict.
So, the worst places to be in a total war would be as follows: first, Russia and Ukraine; second, the United States; third, China and Taiwan; fourth, the continental European territories closest to the Iron Curtain; fifth, North and South Korea; sixth, India and Pakistan; seventh, the Middle East; and eighth, the Sahel and North Africa.
The conclusion we draw from this is that the safest country in the event of a total war is probably not in Europe, not even Switzerland. The classic country that has managed to remain neutral has many factors that suggest it would not be a safe haven this time. As you all know, Switzerland's economy is strongly linked to the European Union and the United States. These financial ties, heavily centered on investments and banks, could be on a knife's edge in the event of a global conflict.
Moreover, we are assuming that a third world war would likely be a nuclear war. Switzerland shares borders with several of the most important NATO countries, so we wouldn’t choose to take refuge there. In fact, Europe is a fairly small continent, with many connections between its countries and a high population density. If the war were worse than nuclear — and yes, it could happen if we’re talking about biological or chemical warfare — a war-torn Europe would be a terrible place to live.
Okay, so we're leaving Europe. Given the current situation, we might also have to rule out Asia. Speaking of China, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Korea, Japan, or Taiwan, any region near these countries would be compromised. However, we could perhaps consider some of the Southeast Asian countries, members of ASEAN, which have a policy of neutrality. But honestly, moving to a region that’s sandwiched between China and India doesn’t seem like the best option either. There are far more appealing places with a higher quality of life. Since we're looking for a refuge, let’s aim for a place with the highest possible level of development.
Above the equator, we have two regions left. The first is Africa, which, given its level of development, doesn’t seem like a good option. Moreover, countries like Morocco and Algeria in North Africa are bitter enemies and are completely aligned with the current bloc politics. Below these countries, we have the Sahel region, which, besides being utterly underdeveloped, is likely to be one of the global conflict's battlegrounds. Life isn’t great in the southern countries either, so it’s better to rule out Africa altogether.
