1. The Legend of Sage Japali
The temple is named after Sage Japali (or Maharshi Jabali), a great saint who performed intense penance at this location.
• Swayambhu Idol: Pleased by the sage's devotion, Lord Hanuman is said to have manifested himself as a Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol.
• The Name: The word "Japali" is derived from "Japam" (meditation), reflecting the sage’s long history of prayer at the site.
2. Connections to the Ramayana
The site is steeped in Ramayana lore and is believed to have been a place of rest and meditation for the divine:
• Exile Stay: It is widely believed that Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshmana stayed here during their 14-year exile (Aranyavasa).
• Rama Kund: Within the temple premises is a pond called Rama Kund, which is said to have been the source of water for Lord Rama’s family.
• Hanuman’s Peace: Legend says that after his journey to Lanka to find Mata Sita, Hanuman stopped here to find peace and quiet his mind.
• Birthplace Theory: Some ancient texts and recent studies by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) suggest that the Anjanadri Hill area, where this temple is located, is the actual birthplace of Lord Hanuman.
3. The Sacred Japali Theertham
The temple is famous for its holy pond, the Japali Theertham.
• Cleansing Sins: Devotees believe that taking a dip in this water washes away sins, removes the influence of evil spirits, and brings mental peace.
• Healing Properties: The water is considered to have spiritual healing powers, attracting thousands of pilgrims seeking solace and protection.
4. Unique Features & Surroundings
• The Entrance Ganesha: At the entrance, there is a unique tree where a form of Lord Ganesha is said to have naturally appeared at the base.
• Architecture: The temple is simple and lacks a traditional high tower (Rajagopuram), emphasizing its humble, forest-shrine origins.
• The Trek: To reach the temple, devotees must undertake a scenic 1 km trek through a lush forest path. The area is also known for its population of Malabar Giant squirrels and monkeys.
Visitor Information
• Location: About 5–7 km from the main Tirumala Temple, on the way to Akasa Ganga.
• Timings: Generally open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
• Best Time to Visit: The forest path is most beautiful after the monsoon or during the cool winter months.
