“The Needles is an often-overlooked section of Canyonlands National Park, that boasts thrilling, unique hiking trails, low crowds, and jaw-dropping views of Canyonlands.
“The Needles is one of four districts that make up Canyonlands National Park. It forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. Hiking trails offer many opportunities for long day hikes and overnight trips. Foot trails and four-wheel-drive roads lead to such features as Tower Ruin, Confluence Overlook, Elephant Hill, the Joint Trail, and Chesler Park.
“The Needles district is 75 miles from Moab, Utah. The main road that runs through the park is less than 7 miles long and it only takes 10 minutes to drive. However, there is a whole web of dirt and gravel roads that lead from this main, paved road providing endless adventures. Some of these dirt roads are suitable for standard cars and several of them require a 4×4 WITH low range, and/or a permit.
“Don’t think the Needles is worth the extra time? Think again. If you like hiking, unique desert landscapes, and leaving the crowds behind, you will love the Needles!”
OK. Now that we have the formalities out of the way.. today we are focusing on the paved scenic drive alone, as an out and back day trip from Moab, Utah. We actually began from our camp spot at Dead Horse Point, which added an additional 30 miles. We didn’t even leave until after lunch, so as to capture the late day light and… it was a bit of a last minute choice to cram this must-do adventure into our short five days here! Ah, the joy of serendipitous decisions.. Totally worth it, as this was an all time favorite of the entire trip. Newspaper Rock petroglyphs was a brilliant stop, right off the main road into the park.
I am a lover of big landscapes, massive rocks and all things desert. And as I always do, I love to give you that handheld POV perspective showing you what I see, from the front seat. And if you happen to notice the camera shifting, or wandering a bit… well.. that’s a touch of my human nature as I often get distracted while I am filming at taking in everything beyond what’s in the frame. It’s also a little because the bumps in the road are not always kind to my phone’s stabilization capabilities. I’m definitely seeing where my improvements need to be, but at the same time love that it gives the genuine sense of being there. It’s real.
The Needles District Scenic Drive is one to put on the list, as the ENTIRE drive from Moab is worthy of the time it takes to get to what little paved road there is within the park boundaries. I will say, that there really are no amount of words to describe this place. It is vast, and massive. It is a journey into the heart of the untamed desert, a place of profound solitude where the sheer scale of the landscape humbles the soul and stretches the imagination. When I edit, I am engrossed completely within the scene, allowing the music I choose to voice the everlasting beauty of a landscape that aches to sing.🎶
Anyways… I made this one for me. It was originally 27 minutes long, but I do like to keep my videos under 15 minutes so these scenes just happened to make the final cut. I’ve been a little under the weather the past few days, so this was a great project to pass the time while recovering. And no school today means I get to write without pressure… so you get more words today.. Lol.
Please enjoy this scenic drive through one of Utah’s best hidden gems—one that gets little attention but rewards those who make the effort to go. It’s more than amazing. It’s incredible.
I’ll catch ya next time!♥️
