Day 1 | Lago di Braies to Rifugio Pederü | Alta Via 1

I am spending the next month in Italy hiking the Alta Via 1 and exploring some of the historic cities in this beautiful country. I’m also taking this opportunity to brush up on my Italian!

In this video, I meet up with 4 fellow members of the YesFam in Dobbiaco. We travel together further into the Italian Dolomites to the trailhead for the Alta Via 1 route. The trail begins at Lago di Braies, an alpine lake nestled in the heart of the Dolomites. The trek began with an easy walk around the lake before we began our ascent into the mountains. Day 1 would have us ending at Pederü, a place where we could refuel with food and sleep.

We opted to book through an agency called Bookatrekking. The handled all of the rifugio bookings, so all we had to do was show up! The rifugios book out months in advance, so we made our reservations in December of the past year (and did the trek in late July). We were blessed with fantastic weather for our trek, but always be aware that weather in the mountains can change in an instant. I hope you enjoy this series of daily vlogs from the AV1 trek!
