Among her many talents, Pamela Colman Smith was a gifted stage and costume designer. She had an incredible eye and a deep appreciation for the theatre, describing theatre-going as “a habit where one cultivates a new kind of observation, a new pair of eyes and ears.”
Here are a few excerpts from “Appropriate Stage Decoration” by Pamela Colman Smith (1901):
“…A coat of curious cut should not be made less fantastic than the original, but more so. For the use of costume on the stage, cut is more important than material. The textiles now used in the dressing of costume plays are far too expensive and ineffective. Cotton stuffs and woolens can be used with greater effect, in many cases, than silks, satins, and cloth of gold.
The most important part of costume is the wearing of it, and is the greatest difficulty met by the designer. How few players know how to put on, and wear, their clothes, with an air of distinction!
...The designer must insist on the balance being kept, and work in harmony with, and not be ruled by, the producer or stage manager. Of course, the producer must have confidence in the designer to complete his work...”
