Bangladesh has entered a new political phase after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024 and the recent electoral victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). An interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus oversaw the transition before national elections were held on February 12, 2026. The change in Dhaka has been widely discussed in India, with official messages welcoming the democratic process.
However, beyond the diplomatic exchanges, a key question remains for Northeast India: what happens to the long-standing issue of illegal immigration?
For decades, political parties specially the BJP in Assam and other northeastern states have promised detection and deportation of undocumented migrants. The assumption has often been that deportation to Bangladesh is the primary solution. But that raises a practical concern — deportation requires acceptance by the receiving country. Bangladesh has not officially acknowledged the presence of large numbers of undocumented migrants from India, making the process complex.
In this episode of Decoded we look into the history of Bangladesh’s two major political parties — the Awami League and the BNP — and their differing political positions. We also look at India’s domestic measures, including Foreigners’ Tribunals, detention centres and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and evaluates their outcomes.
With thousands of cases pending in Foreigners’ Tribunals and questions raised about their functioning, the larger policy challenge remains unresolved. Despite years of political focus, there is still no clear public data on the scale of illegal immigration or a transparent roadmap for deportation.
As governments change in Dhaka and elections approach in Assam and Manipur, is the region is any closer to a workable solution — or whether the core issue will remain unaddressed.
