In a major policy shift, Pakistan has lifted the Minimum Export Price (MEP) on rice, set at $1,300 per metric ton, to boost exports.
This decision follows India's recent removal of its own MEP on basmati rice, allowing Pakistan to compete in global markets. While Pakistan's rice exports hit $3.9 billion last year, the high MEP had made it difficult to compete with India’s $5.9 billion basmati exports.
Will this move help Pakistan regain lost market share and reach the $5 billion mark?
