This is my project concerning the replication of the the papyrus of “The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor”,
the tale is written in high quality middle Egyptian hieratic script. The tale itself is simply written, but adheres to the high standard grammatical construct of middle Egyptian language.
Enjoy the process of creation!
The Tale of The Ship-Wrecked Sailor is a text dated to the Middle Kingdom of Egypt (2040-1782 BCE).
According to scholar Miriam Lichtheim:
The only preserved papyrus copy of the tale was discovered by Glenischeff [a scholar] in the Imperial Museum of St. Petersburg. Nothing is known about its original provenance. The papyrus, called P. Leningrad 1115, is now in Moscow. The work, and the papyrus copy, date from the Middle Kingdom.
In The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor there is no death and resurrection but the theme of an individual becoming lost in a strange and frightening land and then returning home is central and this would have resonated with an ancient Egyptian audience.
