Two kilometers off the shore of Lake Erie sits one of Ontario’s most isolated and historic landmarks — the Mohawk Island Lighthouse.
Built in 1848, this abandoned lighthouse once guided ships through the dangerous eastern basin of Lake Erie, where sudden storms, shifting shoals, and heavy fog made navigation treacherous. Today, the island stands quiet — weathered stone walls, empty windows, and the constant sound of waves crashing against the rock.
In this video, I explore the remains of Mohawk Island, walking through the abandoned lighthouse and imagining what life was like for the keepers who once lived and worked here — completely surrounded by water.
