The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 is a predecessor (Next Generation) to the GK104 which was the GTX 680 of the Kepler family. Maxwell (GM204) differs in many ways from the GK104, the architecture was designed to consume as little power as possible 165W which is 30W less than the GTX 680. When compared to the GTX 680 the GTX 980 contains 33% more cores and has higher clock speeds, by redesigning the SM, Maxwell’s architecture utilizes CUDA cores more frequently which decreases power consumption and increases performance. The L2 cache of the Maxwell design is four times that of the Kepler design containing 2MB this actually maximizes bandwidth by reducing the amount of requests from the GPU DRAM. Other notable changes are 4GB of 7GBs 256-bit memory (224 GB/s vs 192 GB/s), twice the amount of ROPs which is 32 and an increase in TFLOPS based on clock speed (4.6 base vs 3.1 and 5 boost vs 3.3).
