The VOX Pathfinder 15r is an amazing solid state amp. It has built in tremolo and spring reverb as well as a top boost gain channel. What makes it so amazing is that it can be as responsive as a tube amp at moderate volumes. The harder you dig into your strings, the more dynamic your sound.
The solid state Pathfinder can produce a very similar tone to the all tube AC30C2 at moderate volumes. At a moderate volume the solid state amp has plenty of head room and can remain responsive and sound very similar to a tube amp.
In this demo, the VOX Pathfinder holds its ground next to the classic VOX AC30C2, Class A, 30 Watt Tube amp which costs ten times as much. Of course I don't crank the Pathfinder or else it would sound like a solid state amp and not like a tube amp. I had the Pathfinder's master volume at a maximum of 50% on the clean tone. The AC30's master volume was at 10%.
In this video I attempt to set similar settings on the VOX Pathfinder as I do on the VOX AC30C2. The Pathfinder can go pretty loud with its 8" bulldog speaker even at 50% volume. The AC30 has two 12" Celestion speakers which can become very dynamic and cause my video camera mic to clip and become overloaded (a tube amp has a very dynamic volume).
No effects were used in this demo. The guitar is plugged direct into the amp.
The demo was recorded by placing a video camera approximately four feet away from the amps. The sound you hear is what was captured by the video camera's onboard mic.
