The eaglet has hatched!
The first of two baby American bald eagles broke free of its shell and was chirping away on its first day on Saturday. Eagle mom Harriet and her mate E9 bring fresh fish and other tasty treats to their new arrival. The nest is really big. It measures over 60 feet.
Eagle eggs hatch one to several days apart depending on when they were laid. Harriet laid her first egg this year on November 22. She laid a second egg laid three days later. So the egglets hatch a few days apart.
It takes about 10 to 12 weeks for a newborn eaglet to finally fledge - or fly - from the nest on their own.
Eagle cam viewers around the world once again are glued to the live Southwest Florida Eagle Cam in Fort Myers to keep track of eagle activity in the nest. The popular live video stream has three cameras around the nest and the nearby pond.
