WORKFLOW CHEATSHEET
(I pasted this in to the NOTES APP on my phone, so I’ve got it in the field)
ON THE CAMERA
1. Optionally, turn off in-camera processing for long exposures, since it doubles the wait time. That setting is on page 2 of the first menu tab.
2. The Drive mode must be Single Shot. That’s on Tab 1, page 3 of the menu.
3. The camera shutter type must be set to “Mechanical”. That’s on the second setup tab, on pg. 5.
ON THE PLUTO TRIGGER
1. Connect an S2 cable (order from PlutoTrigger.com) between the trigger and the multi port on the RX100
2. Open the Pluto Trigger APP on your smart device
3. In Settings, set camera brand to Sony
4. Turn on the Pluto trigger, switch toward the “P” on logo
5. Activate the Bluetooth link. If you are connected to the Pluto Trigger, a trigger battery status will appear in the upper right of the App screen. Otherwise you will see a small spinning icon, indicating the App is searching for a trigger.
6. Select the “ND Filter” function near the bottom of the hamburger menu list
SETTING THE EXPOSURE
1. Enter the value of the ND filter you will be using. I’d recommend starting with a 10 stop, or ND1000
2. Estimate the length of time you want for your exposure, depending on your composition. I like to start with about a minute. NOTE: The camera can do exposures up to 30 seconds internally
3. Adjust the Base Speed on the app until the desired exposure time is reached
4. Set the Base Speed determined in the previous step as the RX100 exposure
5. Adjust RX100 aperture as desired for your composition
6. Adjust the RX100 ISO for a proper exposure
7. Repeat steps 1-6 if necessary until you are happy with the long exposure time, f-stop and ISO values
8. Acquire focus on the RX100
9. Switch to manual focus in order to “lock in” the focus point
10. Take a reference shot
11. Attached the ND filter to the RX100
12. Set the RX100 exposure time to “BULB”. NOTE: if it won’t go into BULB mode, check to make sure you are operating in Mechanical Shutter, and you are in Single Drive Mode.
13. Tap the time on the App. The App should start to count down and the green LED should light on the Pluto Trigger
14. Once the exposure is complete, compare it with the reference photo you made in step 10 above
ND FILTER VALUES
1 stop: 0.3 ND Factor 2
2 stops: 0.6 ND Factor 4
3 stops: 0.9 ND Factor 8
4 stops: 1.2 ND Factor 16
5 stops: 1.5 ND Factor 32
6 stops: 1.8 ND Factor 64
7 stops: 2.1 ND Factor 128
8 stops: 2.4 ND Factor 256
9 stops: 2.7 ND Factor 512
10 stops: 3.0 ND Factor 1024
