Florida sheriff outlines what led up to deadly eviction

Three weeks after a routine court-ordered eviction turned deadly in Indian River County, Sheriff Eric Flowers pushed back forcefully Friday against public speculation that deputies or agency procedures played a role in the shooting that killed Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow and locksmith David Long.
“There’s only one person who’s at fault for this terrible tragedy,” Flowers said. “And that’s the shooter that was killed who tried to ambush our deputies.”
Flowers’ update comes amid growing online questions and criticism surrounding the Nov. 21 shooting — including the number of prior calls to the home, whether warning signs were missed, and why deputies were not accompanied by specialized units.
