として～ない
not at all; there is not even one

として + Verb-ないform

It is used to emphasize the negative expression that follows the word that expresses the smallest unit.

In front of "として", the form of "1 + counter word" such as 1 day, 1 person, 1 second, etc. is connected. It expresses that it does not exist at all. This sentence pattern emphasizes that the quantity is small.
example:一日として～ない、一人として～ない、一つとして～ない etc.

Each language has its own way of counting things and in Japanese, there are literally hundreds of different counters. A counter is a word that describes a thing that you are counting, for example people, time, animals, and so on.


１〇のペン：This is the counter for long objects, such as pens, bottles and chopsticks. It’s also the counter for train tracks, rivers and umbrellas.


１〇の本：This is the counter for all things book-related: books, notepads, magazines, booklets, dictionaries and so on.


１〇の紙：Use this counter for flat, thin objects like pieces of paper and tickets. It can also be used to count clothing like pants and shirts, as well as walls and single servings of soba.


１〇の靴：The kanji for this counter means “foot” or “leg”, so we use this as a counter for pairs of shoes, slippers, socks, ice skates etc.


～も～ない vs として～ない
It has almost the same meaning as ～も～ない, which also means “not at all; there is not even one”, but として～ない emphasizes the negative expression more.


あの日の出来事は一日も忘れたことがない。
あの日の出来事は一日として忘れたことがない。
I have never forgotten what happened that day.


明日は日本語能力試験だ。１分も無駄にはできない
明日は日本語能力試験だ。１分として無駄にはできない
Tomorrow is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. I cannot waste even a minute.


このお店のカバンは高いものばかりで、一つとして私が買えそうなものはない。
The bags in this shop are all expensive, and I cannot buy even one.


相手チームは強いので、一瞬として油断するわけにはいかない。
The opposing team is strong, so we can't let our guard down even for a moment.


山田さんはケチだから缶ジュース一本としておごってくれない。

It is often used together with interrogative words.
