The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles connected to the humerus, or upper arm. These muscles originate on the scapulae, or shoulder blades and serve as a dynamic joint stabilizer.
For healthy functioning rotator cuffs and pain-free shoulders, there needs to be a rhythm that exists between the upper arm and the shoulder blade. This is referred to as scapula-humeral rhythm.
As the head of the humerus moves, the scapula simultaneously seeks a position of stability in relation to the humerus to maintain the humeral head in optimal alignment within the shoulder socket.
For every few degrees the arm moves, the shoulder blade should move on a small scale., however, traditional benches are manufactured using flat bench surface designs, which severely restrict shoulder mobility and prevent this natural rhythm from taking place.
The bench itself limits the movement of the scapula, at the shoulder joint and the 'ball' is forced to move to the edge of its range in the 'socket'. The scapula is unable to retract on the latter part of the down phase, as the elbow moves past the point of the shoulder (the humerus is horizontally hyperextending); and is unable to protract when the elbow is moving upwards.
This disruption of the shoulder’s natural mechanics puts extreme stress on the rotator cuff muscles, and as they become derailed further, it can lead to the equally hazardous condition of impingement, which is then followed by rotator cuff tears, breakdown of joint stability, muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and eventually shoulder dislocation.
To solve these problems, we created The Launch Pad. This revolutionary product lets you safely leverage a stable, ergonomic foundation that optimizes mechanics and supports proper posture, helping you train harder, better, and faster with more weight than ever before.
