Margaret Eloise Hatcher, née Brannigan (March 12, 1836 – c. 1930) was an American woman born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she lived for the entirety of her life. In this recording, Mrs. Hatcher speaks directly about her eldest daughter Ellen — the decision she made in 1877 to end Ellen's courtship with a schoolteacher and arrange her marriage to a more prosperous farmer, the forty-three years of formal coldness that followed, and Ellen's death in 1921 without reconciliation. She does not apologize. She explains why.
