ationship throughout their time together, something we’ll cover in a little bit. The demos Reznor created were much more synth oriented and not very industrial, so you can imagine where I’m going with this story.

Reznor did find a kindred spirit in the cleveland music scene when he me guitarist Richard Patrick who was in the group the Act, which Reznor had played in. The pair soon started attending concerts together seeing groups like Skinny Puppy and Ministry. And Revolting Cocks (with the last two bands featuring Al Jourgensons) Patrick told author jon weiderhorn It was really Al Jourgensen’s [1986] album Twitch and sound design from Skinny Puppy that were the building blocks for Nine Inch Nails. Trent liked Twitch because it was a little more pop-oriented and it used traditional songwriting, but it was still weird and had rough edges and was jagged and scary.”

At one point Reznor even served as a roadie for Ministry and the band played a lot of pranks on him. THey’d throw firecrackers into his bunk on the tour bus, another time he fell asleep in the studio with al jourgenson. When Reznor woke up, his head waas shaved.

Reznor described this period of his life as not being very happhy. He even sent his demo tape to his uncle, who was in the middle of hiring a new secretary with himm telling an interviewer. “This one girl was waiting for him to finish a meeting, and he gave her the tape to listen to,He came back, and she had left. When he called her the next day, she said, ‘I was listening to the tape, and I realized I don’t want to work for this company.’ That’s pretty much what I was setting out to do.”

Reznor collaborated with several producers on his new songs including Mark "Flood" Ellis, known for his work with Depeche Mode, to shape the album's sound.Reznor's approach was to maintain a lo-fi aesthetic, which added to the album's claustrophobic and paranoid feel. Reznor remarked “What is industrial, then? I’d basically define it as dance music that’s a bit harder, a bit tougher, definitely with a drum machine and maybe some distorted vocals.

The album also featured samples from several artists including Prince, jane’s Addiction and Public Enemy. Reznor wanted to use more samples but time was a huge factor and he later remarked he didn’t want the able to sound too dated. Reznor virtually recorded the whole album himself, with Patrick doing a guitar outro on sanctified.. He came up with the name Nine Inch Nails thinking it would be "abbreviated easily" rather than for "any literal meaning"

When Reznor turned in the album to TVT, they were less than enthusiastic about it. The frontman remarked to HBO [Steve] Gottlieb (founder of TVT Records), said, ‘Well, this record is an abortion.’ That’s a blow coming when you’ve never made a record before, and he’s put records out, maybe he knows more than I do. He said to me, ‘You up what could have been a good career.’

Released on October 20, 1989, Pretty Hate Machine was a bold and innovative album that combined industrial rock with electronic and pop elements. The album's themes of angst, alienation, resonated with listeners, making it a commercial success and a critical darling. Songs like "Head Like a Hole" and "Terrible Lie" showcased Reznor's ability to combine catchy hooks with dark, introspective lyrics. The album first appeared on the billboard album chart in February of 1990 with it eventually peaking at number 75. But it was a slow burn. Over the next several years it started to hit sales milestones, with it going gold by march of 1992 - shipping half a million copies and by 1995 thanks to several more album releases raising the band’s profile. it became one of the first independent releases to go platinum. Pretty hate machine at one point spent 115 weeks on the album chart, in america surprisingly tying their 1994 record the downward spiral for their longest charting release. Pretty hate machine eventually went on to sell 3 million copeis in the states.
