Nicola Quick from Duke University, USA, explains how Cuvier’s beaked whales are capable to remaining submerged for 77.7minutes before they resort to anaerobic respiration when their oxygen reserves run low, but there doesn’t seem to be a pattern to how long they take to recover from these exceptionally long dives, with one whale resuming diving within 20minutes of a 2hour dive, while another whale took 4h to recover from an hour dive.
