Famous musician legal battles, they’re like that fiery wreck on the side of the road. You want to look away, but you just can’t. Today, we’ve got our eyes glued to the scene as we cover some formidable rock bands. Some of the players include giants like Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, and a former Beatle. Coming in at #5 ….It one from the year 1985.. Truly one of the craziest lawsuits in music history… “Fogerty vs Fantasy, Inc.” It was a matchup that pitted former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty against himself… Or more specifically, John Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like… John Fogerty. Let me explain. In 1985, Fogerty, one-time frontman of Creedence Clearwater Revival, released his third solo album, Centerfield. The lead single from the record was a song called The Old Man Down The Road. The track reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100; the song was a bona fide comeback hit for the swamp rocker. John had been sidelined from the music industry since the 70s thanks to ongoing legal disputes with his CCR label, Fantasy Records.

The Old Man Down the Road signified a long-awaited moment of victory for Fogerty, who hadn’t had a Top 10 hit in 14 years. Not since his days with Creedence. And he had not released a solo album since 1975. But problems started to arise for John when Fantasy Records and label owner Saul Zaentz came sniffing around ‘The Old Man Down the Road.’ Instigating a copyright infringement suit, they claimed that the song was essentially the same as CCR’s 1970 hit Run Through the Jungle… a song that they owned the copyright for. It didn’t matter that John wrote both songs. If Fantasy could convince a jury that there was no meaningful difference between the two tracks, they could erase Fogerty’s authorship of ‘Old Man’ and cash in on the track. This would also establish a devastating precedent for the musicians, meaning that songwriters could not claim to have their own style of music.
